Liverpool FC have a crucial clash against Aston Villa on Wednesday 19th February where both teams will be fighting for points in the Premier League table.

The Reds recently played Wolves at Anfield on Sunday in a surprisingly tough match, which resulted in a 2-1 loss to Wolves who continue their battle out of relegation.

Liverpool manager, Arne Slot, described the game as a ‘mental test’ for the team, as they focused on defending while Wolves took all the risks in the final 20 minutes.

A shocking statistic derived from the match: Liverpool didn’t attempt to take a shot in the second half of the game for the first time since 2017.

Regardless, the Reds still sit at the top of the table with a seven-point lead over Arsenal, holding on to their hopes of the title.

Luis Diaz opened the scoring in the 15th minute, which was followed by a Liverpool penalty

by Mohammed Salah, his 23rd Premier League goal this season.

Wolverhampton Wanderers made a second-half comeback with Matheus Cunha curling a strike into the far corner.

Wolves fans left disappointed with one fan saying: “It was always going to be tough playing away at Anfield”.

The upcoming match against Aston Villa will kick off at 7:30 pm at Villa Park.

Villa had a frustrating 1-1 draw against a 10-man Ipswich on Saturday; manager Unai Emery said the game was a wasted opportunity to secure their European ambitions for another season.

Both teams have a pile-up of tough fixtures in the next couple of weeks and securing those 3 points is crucial for the teams at this point in the season.

A Liverpool fan said: “Villa are pretty good right now so it’s kind of scary…especially with our recent form, it’s been pretty ‘iffy’, but I believe in us.”

Key Liverpool player, Cody Gakpo, who has scored 8 goals this season, may be unavailable for the game against Villa.

Slot said, in the post-Wolves press conference: “He got a knock in the Everton game, a few of us got a knock but he got an injury from that. It’s under debate. It is fast, Wednesday already so let’s wait and see. It wasn’t a soft knock.”

The boss also said Joe Gomez will be out for until the end of the season with a hamstring injury and may need surgery. He said: "That’s always very hard for a player in every part of the season, let alone in the part of the season that everybody is looking forward to".

Slot was on the touchline for the game against Wolves, however, his red card after the heated derby game means he is awaiting a likely two-game ban.

Villa, pushing to secure that spot in Europe, will provide a tough game for Liverpool.

Fans are anticipating a thrilling clash, with both teams battling for crucial Premier League points in a critical double-game week.
